Size guide

At Equinista you will find riding wear and equipment from manufacturers in Italy, France, Scandinavia and Germany. Each brand uses its own sizing system. This page gives conversions into German, Italian, French, British, American and Japanese sizes. Where a manufacturer publishes its own measurements, we show them; these always take precedence over general charts.

How to read sizes in the shop: women's sizes appear as DE 34 / IT 40, men's sizes as IT 48, helmets in cm head circumference, shoes as EU 38, horse rugs as 155 cm · 6'9".

How to measure

Chest circumference: horizontally across the fullest part of the chest, under the arms.
Waist: at the narrowest point of the torso, usually slightly above the navel.
Hips: horizontally across the fullest part of the seat.
Head circumference: horizontally above the forehead and directly above the ears.
Collar size: around the neck, below the Adam's apple, leaving room for one finger.
Hand circumference: around the palm below the knuckles, excluding the thumb.

Women: breeches, jackets, shirts

Cavalleria Toscana and most Italian brands produce in Italian sizes. According to Cavalleria Toscana, the Italian size is six sizes above the German one: IT 40 corresponds to DE 34. That is why women's items in the shop show both, for example DE 34 / IT 40.

The Japanese size is an approximate value from general conversion charts; Japanese sizes run smaller. If in doubt, choose by body measurements.

In words: IT 36 corresponds to DE 30, FR 32, UK 4 and US 0. IT 38 corresponds to DE 32, FR 34, UK 6 and US 2. IT 40 corresponds to DE 34, FR 36, UK 8 and US 4. IT 42 corresponds to DE 36, FR 38, UK 10 and US 6. IT 44 corresponds to DE 38, FR 40, UK 12 and US 8. IT 46 corresponds to DE 40, FR 42, UK 14 and US 10.

Men: breeches, show jackets, shirts

Men's sizes are the same in Italy, Germany and France: IT 48 corresponds to DE 48 and FR 48. We therefore do not convert and write the size as IT 48. For brands not from Italy, it reads EU 48; the number is the same.

EQUESTRO

EQUESTRO produces in Italian sizes and does not publish a conversion into German sizes. The shop therefore shows only the Italian size, for example IT 40. The tables show the measurements EQUESTRO gives for the product. The safest approach is to compare the waist width with a pair of breeches that fits you well.

Mountain Horse

Mountain Horse from Sweden uses European sizes. The shop therefore shows, for example, DE 38.

Kids

Children's items are listed in the shop by age, for example 8 years. Because children grow at different rates, height is the better guide. In Europe and Japan, the children's size is the height in centimetres.

Riding helmets

A riding helmet's size is the head circumference in centimetres: with a head circumference of 56 cm, you need a 56 cm helmet. Sizes in the shop are therefore given in cm. If you fall between two sizes, try on both.

Approximate values based on the size chart of the equestrian manufacturer Ariat; UK up to EU 42 follows the women's chart, from EU 43 the men's chart. The Japanese figure is the label size, not the measured foot length.

Alberto Fasciani makes riding boots by EU shoe size with calf width (S, N, L, XL, XL2) and shaft height (-2, Standard, M, L). The boots are made to your measurements: you measure shoe size, calf and shaft on both legs and send us the figures; we will provide you with the measuring template.

Riding gloves use the same size number internationally, for example 7.5. It is based on the hand circumference.

The belt size is the length in centimetres. In the shop it is shown with a letter, for example M · 97 cm.

Airbag vests (Seaver)

The figure 24 g or 33 g indicates the fill quantity of the CO₂ cartridge. 24 g belongs to vests XXS to XS Long, 33 g to S to XL.

Horse rugs

With Bucas, the rug size is not the back length. The measurement is taken from the centre of the chest, over the highest point of the shoulder, to the back edge of the hind leg, in a straight line. Bucas assigns the measured length to a rug size using the chart. In the shop, the rug size is shown together with the British figure, for example 155 cm · 6'9".

Source: Bucas catalogue 2026. If your measurement falls between two values, choose the nearest size. Other manufacturers measure and assign sizes differently in some cases; the information on the product is what counts.

In words: according to Bucas, size 155 suits a measured length of 206 cm and corresponds to 6'9" in the UK and 81 inches in the USA. Size 145 suits 198 cm (6'6", 78 inches), size 135 suits 183 cm (6'0", 72 inches).

Saddle pads, fly veils and headcollars

Pony, Cob, Full and XL are not standardised sizes; each manufacturer cuts slightly differently. The safest approach is to measure a saddle pad that fits well, or ask us, quoting the size of your saddle.
