KASK Reithelm Star Lady Frame Aureum in Braun

Choosing the right riding helmet size: measuring, trying on, picking a model

The size of a KASK riding helmet is not a clothing size but a measurement: it corresponds to your head circumference in centimetres. If you measure 57, you need size 57. That is the theory – in practice, what decides it is how the helmet sits.

Measuring correctly

Place a tape measure around your head, directly above the ears and horizontally across the forehead. Note the value in centimetres. Make sure the tape does not slip downwards at the back – otherwise you will measure too small.

KASK riding helmets – Dogma, Star Lady, Kooki and Kooki Lady – come in sizes 51 to 63 centimetres. You can see which sizes are currently available for a particular model on its product page. The size is also given on the label inside the helmet.

The five points of the fitting check

  1. Wear the helmet for a few minutes first to check that it sits well and causes no pressure points.
  2. Move your head to test how comfortable it is to wear.
  3. When fastened, the helmet should sit comfortably and not shift.
  4. The chin strap and buckle must sit snugly without restricting the movement of your neck.
  5. Finally, check both together: safety and comfort.

A helmet that moves when you shake your head is too big. One that presses after ten minutes is too small or does not suit the shape of your head.

A fit without an adjustment dial

KASK riding helmets work with a self-adjusting fit system: it settles at the nape and adapts the helmet to the shape of your head. There is no dial for readjusting. That also means the size you choose must be right, because there is little room to adjust it.

On the Dogma and Star Lady, the inner padding is made of Merino wool. It can be removed and washed – the exact care instructions are in your helmet's manual. For replacement and for the colder months, the inner padding for Dogma and Star Lady is also available separately.

For fine-tuning at the nape, KASK offers the Comfort Fit System as a neck pad. We are happy to tell you which version suits your helmet size.

What weight makes the difference

Weight increases with size and differs between the model ranges. Kooki and Kooki Lady are the lighter range, Dogma and Star Lady somewhat heavier. You will find the exact values for each model and size on the product pages. A few grams sound like very little – but you notice them in a long dressage session or on a hot competition day.

Which model suits whom?

The choice between the ranges is not purely a matter of taste. Kooki and Kooki Lady are lightweight helmets for everyday life at the stable and in the arena. Dogma and Star Lady are aimed at riders who spend many hours in the saddle and value the Merino inner padding. The most visible difference between Dogma and Star Lady is the peak: the Star Lady has the wider one.

If in doubt, try it on

If you fall between two sizes, this cannot be decided at a desk – heads differ in shape, not just in size. In our shop in Rostock we fit your helmet in person, and if you cannot come by, we will advise you by phone.

Our riding helmet buyer's guide gives an overview of standards, brands and care. You will find all models in the KASK riding helmets collection.

A helmet that does not fit does not protect. That is the only sentence on the subject of size that really counts.
